Little Disney Things #1

9 Apr

One thing I love about animation is the details. You know, those things you don’t notice the first, second, maybe even third viewing. Now, this is an experience that is found in all art forms. But for me personally, there’s something about discovering something in a Disney film, even though you’ve seen gazillions of times Eureka!

I’m a big fan of The Princess and the Frog. I was so excited to see it, and my friends and I went opening night. We were in high school, and we took up a whole row! I was happy to go to New Orleans a few months later. Great city, and Disney captured part of its charm. I also love the Jazz Age, so that’s another reason why I feel connected to that film.

Anyway, Dr. Facilier (The Shadow Man) is one of the coolest Disney villains, In my opinion.

So today I was on tumblr, and I learned something about Dr. Facilier that I didn’t know before. As he is a Witch Doctor, he can do all sorts of supernatural things (like interact with his shadow).

I wasn’t observant enough to figure this out on my own, so I’m totally going to source you who was observant enough: get-fabulous shared this little factoid about Dr. Facilier.

Notice the wallpaper behind him. The designs change to skull and crossbones wherever his shadow hits! Very spooky and sinister (fitting for someone who practices Voodoo). I never noticed that before!

Anyway, that’s all I have for now. I have two essays and a presentation due in the next week at school. Plus taxes. Plus choosing what University I’m going to next fall. So I won’t have anything posted in the next couple of weeks. But I have some thoughts on articles to post once I’m finished, so look forward to that! Remember that presentation I mentioned at the beginning of this paragraph? Well, it’s about Disney. So I’ll abridge that here, as well as my List of Favorite Disney films. Have a great week everybody!

I wanna high-five my shadow! I hope Dreamworks Animation does justice to this idea with their “Me and My Shadow” film that they’re making!

Oh I am so excited or that film! Partly because of the mix between. 2D and CGI animation, and because the hilarious Josh Gad is starring in it!

I also am a big fan of The Princess and the Frog. You know, I don’t think I noticed the wallpaper until you pointed it out. Nice one. And good luck on your university search!

whoo! Yeah, it’s such a fun film. And thank you, I’m pretty sure I know where I’ll go, but it’s not official yet.

Oh wow, awesome!! And I know exactly what you mean–there are some movies you watch like ten times, and then the eleventh time you’re finally like, “Oh… OHHHH!” Animation is especially good at the hidden visual details!

Also, good luck with your essays and project!! I think you’ll get 402% (A+++++++++) on each of them!

Thank you!! I hope so too, I’ll only do good if I (manage) to pull myself away from the computer, the fridge, and the drawing pad! I’m a procrastination master.

O: OMG I feel you!! Last night I didn’t start my homework until 11:00!! ^^” Drawing is literally the best and the worst at the same time, because you can hardly banish all paper from your room to keep yourself from doodling!

Also, I saw your dA and OMG I LOVE YOUR ART!!

      • Kenzie (manicmation) April 10, 2013 at 5:47 pm #

I’m the exact same way! The worst is during school, I’ll always doodle in the margins. And thank you so much, you’re so sweet! I actually am not too proud of my dA, bc a lot of the work is really old. I am too lazy to upload anything new! >_<

Oh I know, right? And then I feel bad because it looks like I’m not paying attention, but I am!!

O: I know that feeling! But I think it all looks great, and I’m sure your newer stuff is even awesomer! 8D

Much thanks! I’ll have to update stuff, eventually! I’m working on the 30 Day Drawing Challenge, and I want to draw my favorite character from each Disney film. (I’ve only done 1 so far haha)

      • Merida DunBroch April 10, 2013 at 11:05 pm #

Ohh, cool!! Good luck!! I’m sure they’ll look fantastic! 8D And I like how you’re connecting it to the disney films! SOOO COOOOL!

So, I guess there’s two things I wasn’t aware of. The skull thing (Holy mother of God, when did that get there?) and your DA. I enjoy your cartoons quite a bit; the Earth Day one in particular has a nice spirit to it.

Thank you so much! I’m glad you liked my drawings. I have to be honest though, I haven’t really truly updated it in a year. I have a lot of much better work, I’m just too lazy to upload it all!

Yes, it took me a while to figure out that it was the Shadow who caught the amulet to save it from breaking… And I noticed the wallpaper only while stop-motioning the movie for Facilier drawing references. It’s amazing how many face changes the man goes through in a second!
